Manager updates council on Route 100 project, housing authority rent change and library summer events

Town Manager Matthew Sturges used his June 10 report to brief the council on several community projects and recent election results. He said the Route 100 roundabout project continues to advance—engineering and survey work are ongoing—and Maine DOT plans a preliminary virtual public meeting with an in-person follow-up in the fall. The project website will open June 29 and remain live through July 15 to collect public comments, he said. "The project does continue to move forward in an aggressive fashion," Sturges said.
Sturges also summarized the June 9 election, reporting that Chair Brooke Tig Filson was reelected to the town center seat and William (Bill) Follett won the at-large seat; Sarah Staples and David Noonan were elected to the school board. He thanked town clerk Jennifer Dotan and election volunteers for the roughly 53% turnout among about 7,200 voters and noted roughly 1,600 absentee ballots were issued with about 80 not returned.
On infrastructure, Sturges said MDOT recommended a four-way stop at Middle Road and Tunnel Road as part of bridge work over I-295; the town accepted the state recommendation after discussing safety data and liability considerations. He also reported ongoing safety and shoulder work on Route 100 and said some night work may be scheduled to limit business disruptions.
Sturges briefed the council on other items: the Cumberland Housing Authority approved a roughly 4% rental-rate increase for the coming fiscal year following no increase last year, and Prince Memorial Library will host a "summer shindig" on June 13 (1–3 p.m.) to kick off summer reading and ongoing seasonal programming.
Sturges closed by noting the "Truck Across Maine" charity ride will pass through Cumberland on Father’s Day along Fourside Road between about 7 a.m. and early afternoon; organizers will not close roads but warned of higher bicyclist volumes.
