Falcon Heights Environment Commission reports strong recycling totals at Sustainability Fair despite low turnout

Staff Liaison Myhren told the Falcon Heights Environment Commission on May 11 that the city's Sustainability Fair proceeded despite cold, windy weather and achieved notable recycling figures. She said 18 organizations staffed tables; Repowered Electronics Recycling collected 1,887 pounds of electronics; EcoShred removed eight 96-gallon carts of paper (about 2,400 pounds); and Retold Recycling collected 808 pounds of textiles.
The commission discussed low attendance at speaker events and the giveaway strategy after staff reported distributing roughly 40 of 100 compost buckets. Myhren said several residents expressed concern that EcoShred takes paper off-site to shred rather than shredding on site, which prompted commissioners to flag the off-site model as an item to consider for next year.
Commissioners also discussed removing the speaker series for future fairs because of low turnout and adjusting giveaway items to increase resident engagement. Myhren said staff will factor those lessons into planning for next year's event.
The commission did not take a formal vote on follow-up steps at this meeting.
