Mount Olive tables lease advertising for Fellowship of Christian Athletes field until Nov. 10

During public comment, Ronnie Wise, youth leader for the Hurricanes/Fellowship of Christian Athletes, described the program’s three tackle teams and cheerleaders and said operating expenses are about $9,000 against roughly $9,500 in revenues. Wise said the group would like a 10‑year lease when the current Hurricanes lease expires and eventually to start a youth wrestling team: “We are here to compliment the Town’s Parks & Recreation Department.”
Town Attorney Carroll Turner explained the legal process for leasing town property beyond one year: the board adopts a resolution authorizing advertising of the lease, the town advertises for 30 days to allow competing proposals, and then the board considers a proposed lease. Turner said advertising gives others an opportunity to request the lease and that either he or Interim Town Manager Glenn Holland would serve as the contact for interested parties.
The board discussed whether to wait until the current Hurricanes lease actually expires or to accept a signed statement from the Hurricanes’ Alex Ferrell to transfer rights to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Mayor Pro‑Tempore Barbara Kornegay moved to table Action Memo 10‑33 to the Nov. 10, 2025 regular board meeting; Commissioner Tommy Brown seconded and the motion passed 5‑0.
No lease was approved or rejected; tabling starts the advertising and proposal period only if the board later adopts the resolution to advertise.
