The Coconino County Board of Supervisors on June 9 approved a first amendment to an Arizona Department of Public Safety local border-support agreement, extending the grant period from June 30, 2026, through December 31, 2026, to complete a regional K-9 training area.
Sheriff Brett Axel described the planned training area adjacent to the county search-and-rescue building as a dedicated location to separate canine training from active-operations zones. "It will not be used for any kind of immigration enforcement," Axel said, and noted the K-9 program’s focus on drug‑trafficking, human‑smuggling and other border‑related crimes. He also told the board the county’s canine teams recently earned top awards at statewide competitions.
Supervisors praised the program and voted to approve the extension unanimously. Staff said the grant funds will cover construction and completion activities through the new deadline.
