District administrators proposed implementing background checks for all coaches — paid and volunteer — to ensure consistent screening for adults who work closely with students.
At the June meeting a presenter said: "I would like to implement background checks for all athletic and academic coaches, paid and volunteer," and indicated the plan could begin in July or August during volunteer onboarding. Staff noted paid coaches already undergo more extensive onboarding and Vector trainings; the discussion focused on balancing safety with volunteer burdens because Vector trainings can be time‑consuming.
Board members and staff discussed operational steps: limiting volunteers’ unsupervised contact until they complete training, issuing identification cards for approved volunteers, and implementing a recheck interval (suggested around two years). The district acknowledged a per‑check cost and said finance and human resources had preliminarily confirmed the process could be implemented in July.
Administrators asked to coordinate with the city recreation department to possibly share training and to confirm whether additional vector‑style training could be offered in a shorter format. No formal board vote took place at the meeting; staff said they would begin implementation and return with operational details and cost estimates.
