North Ogden OKs wildfire municipal agreement with state agency

North Ogden City Council voted unanimously to approve a cooperative wildfire system municipal agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, a measure staff described as a cleanup to a previously approved intergovernmental arrangement.

City staff said the change responds to an internal audit at the state agency that requires each individual jurisdiction to sign its own agreement rather than using a single North View Fire signature. Staff recommended approval because, they said, not signing could leave the city financially liable for wildfire responses; signing, by contrast, carries no direct cost to the city while aligning prevention responsibilities.

The presentation described a larger prevention program that will begin this fall: crews will clear a roughly 150‑foot fuel break along the power‑line corridor, perform cleanup the first year and then use goats or sheep to graze the area for several seasons to maintain the firebreak. Staff said federal funds will pay much of that work and that North View Fire and the local fire district are taking lead roles on prevention activities.

Council members asked clarifying questions about who performs prevention tasks and how the agreement treats shared responsibilities; staff confirmed the fire district’s prevention work counts under the agreement. After brief discussion, Council member Watson moved to approve the agreement; the motion was seconded and carried on a 5–0 vote.

Council direction/next steps: staff will finalize the execution copy with the state agency and continue coordinating on prevention efforts and communications about the upcoming fuel‑reduction work.
