Toms River facilities update: inflatable 'bubble' being replaced; switch gear repaired

District facilities staff reported progress on several capital and maintenance projects: the Hooper Avenue inflatable athletic bubble has been reskinned and refloored with completion expected by late November/early December, an emergency electric switch gear at Intermediate North was repaired before school started, and multiple floor, canopy and signage projects were completed or underway.
District facilities staff briefed the board on several completed and ongoing projects, saying the work should improve safety and restore spaces used for athletics and events.
A presenter reported there are no new capital projects but several continuing projects remain a priority. The inflatable athletic "bubble" on Hooper Avenue is being replaced—reskinned, rewired and refloored—with the new fabric and cables reported as delivered that morning and inflation expected next week, weather permitting. The presenter said the replacement should be complete and ready for use by the first week in December and that the expense had been anticipated in the capital budget.
The presenter described an emergency electrical switch gear failure at Intermediate North that caused smoke over the summer; JCP&L completed the emergency work and the system was switched back on on the 25th, shortly before school began. District staff said they will retain engineers to plan longer-term boiler and replacement work as part of the capital-reserve spending plan.
Work completed this summer includes new floor coverings at several sites and a fully resurfaced and repainted gym floor at High School South. District crews removed a deteriorating concrete canopy on Hooper Avenue and are exploring reusing the original vertical columns to create a pergola for shade at a kindergarten area. Window-wall coping and peeling sections at High School South will be addressed through an RFP for architectural services and included in the district’s five-year plan, staff said.
Signage and electrical work at Intermediate East was reported near completion; district staff said they were awaiting markouts and conduit routing to finalize power to a front sign. A routine groundwater well test at Pine Beach was completed with no issues reported.
Board members asked about scheduling a 110-foot boom to repair lights at High School South; the presenter said contractors were unavailable twice and that a fire-truck option was not viable because of weight on the track, but the district is continuing to pursue access to the required equipment.
A board member thanked Mr. Sida and Mr. Madigan for their summer work on facilities. The meeting then opened public comment and no one spoke.
