The Joplin Building Board of Appeals spent the bulk of its Aug. 22 meeting reviewing status reports on multiple nuisance and potential demolition cases and voting to continue most items to a Sept. 26 hearing.
Staff presented monthly updates on properties across the city. Contractors and listing agents reported mixed progress: Tyler Ledford of Ledford Construction said siding work at 1010 West 3rd was nearly complete but delayed by vendor shortages, while other owners described recent work such as poured footings or boarded and secured windows. Several owners and agents said they are trying to sell properties; listing agent Ryan Flanagan confirmed a contract on 1248 South Roosevelt with a potential closing within 60 days.
Board members repeatedly requested concrete timelines and inspections. For 519 North Pearl staff asked the owner to bring a construction schedule to the next meeting; the owner said windows were being boarded until other work was complete. On a large, complex property at 1220 Northwest Murphy Boulevard, counsel for the owner described recent security upgrades (solar lights, cameras) and a reduced asking price, while staff and the building official emphasized the need to secure OSB boarding (paint and bolting) or pursue a vacant dangerous‑building permit.
The board also discussed a set‑aside dangerous building hearing for 701 South McKinley (which was later heard and resulted in a demolition order) and released several items from the agenda where consent waivers and insurance checks authorized city‑led demolition and abatement work.
Across the agenda, motions to continue items to Sept. 26 for “progress report and demolition hearing” were the typical outcome. The board asked staff to provide updated call logs, inspection timelines and contractor estimates for multiple addresses and to consider additional enforcement steps if owners do not meet code or timelines.
