Superintendent cites early gains in K–2 phonics after district observations

Hardee County Schools’ superintendent, Dr. Albright, reported to the school board on April 9 that the district’s first year of districtwide implementation of the UFLI phonics program is showing positive early results in kindergarten through second grade.
Dr. Albright said a district team observed 32 K–2 classrooms this past week and found teachers growing more confident in their UFLI implementation and students demonstrating improved phonics skills — including students writing sentences dictated by teachers. She commended kindergarten through second-grade teachers for their work and said staff are proud of the progress.
The superintendent explained that the district team includes approximately five district staff plus assistant principals pulled from the elementary schools who attended prior training and an academy in Gainesville. Dr. Albright said the district values the additional expertise that team members provide when supporting classroom implementation.
Dr. Albright also said the University of Florida team will visit next Thursday to observe classrooms at Zolfo and Hilltop elementary schools as part of ongoing support and monitoring. The superintendent framed the program’s rollout as a multi-year effort: she said year one focused on finances and curriculum implementation, and the coming year will emphasize teacher supports and new programming.
"I'm very proud of them," Dr. Albright said of the teachers implementing the phonics program. The board welcomed the update and noted plans for continued observation and support.
