School board approves extending swim association’s pool use through July 31

The Hardee County School Board voted unanimously April 9 to change the end date on a facilities-use request for the district pool complex, extending swim association access through July 31, and then approved the consent agenda that included the change.

Board members discussed a discrepancy between the district’s facilities-use form — which lists a six-month default — and a previously discussed practice to limit long-term agreements to three months. A board member reported speaking with Max Baker, who asked that the association be allowed to use the pool through the end of July to accommodate scheduling. Facilities staff said the requested dates would not conflict with other school scheduling.

Ms. Dasher moved to change the 9.02 request to July 31; Dr. Sharp seconded. The board voted in favor individually: Ms. Cornell (aye), Ms. Dasher (aye), Mr. Smith (aye), Dr. Sharp (aye), and the chair (aye). After that amendment, Ms. Cornell moved to accept the consent agenda as revised; Dr. Sharp seconded and the board again voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda.

Board members asked how quickly the form would be updated; staff and board members said a form committee expects to revise the paperwork before July 1 and recommended adding language that allows the board to approve other dates when warranted. The change announced April 9 amends the approved dates for this request only; the board did not adopt a formal, written policy during the meeting.

The board also corrected the next regular meeting date on the record to April 23 and noted an upcoming Battle of the Books on April 28 at Hardy Junior High.
