Thomas also explained a constraint: the Historic Preservation Fund program can cover up to 60% of a preservation staff salary, but it requires the employer to pay at least an industry-standard minimum to qualify. Thomas said the city’s current pay for the relevant position falls below that required threshold, making the commission ineligible for the staffing portion of that grant. He noted the commission could still pursue other grant or program opportunities but that a salary increase would be necessary to qualify for the 60% staffing support.
Commissioners welcomed the positive evaluation and discussed implications for staffing and advocacy to city leadership. No formal action was taken at the meeting; the conversation was informational and staff were asked to follow up as needed.
