The Joplin City Historic Preservation Commission on Feb. 25 approved a nominations window for its 2025 preservation awards, with staff recommending a roughly 30-day period that would open March 10 (or March 17, if scheduling requires) and close April 18.
Staff said they planned to place a proclamation on the city council agenda for the first meeting in May and to coordinate press releases and social media through the city’s marketing division. “If you want to set, like, a 30 day window, you could do the ives of March to the ives of April,” the staff member told the commission, and asked commissioners to recruit non‑commission members to serve on the selection committee.
The commission discussed past nomination patterns — some awards drawing strong competition while others receive few entries — and staff said they retain prior applications and a winners list to encourage repeat applications. The commission noted certain awards are for former commissioners (for example, the Leslie Simpson award), and staff confirmed eligibility rules and past recipients are maintained in commission records.
A motion to open nominations from March 10 (or March 17 if needed) through April 18 was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote. Staff will request a March 10 opening and follow up with marketing and committee recruitment via email to finalize venue and logistics.
The commission then moved on to a separate resolution concerning a grant application before adjourning.
