Somerville Board Honors Educators of the Year and Long‑Serving Retirees

Administrators described the district’s selection process: each building solicits nominations in the fall, a local committee of educators, parents and administrators selects building winners, and the county then recognizes finalists before the district ceremony. The superintendent thanked Mary Kaine, the district director of curriculum, and her team for producing the recognition video.
The meeting also honored a number of retirees whose careers spanned decades. Colleagues spoke about the retirees’ dedicated service to students with diverse needs, leadership of extracurricular programs, and daily classroom commitments. Remarks included extended personal anecdotes: Jerry Foley highlighted Spanish teacher Jen Russo’s patience and mentorship; Scott Hay praised another retiree’s steady commitment and student advocacy; and administrators recalled others’ long records of classroom work, special‑education supports, and curricular contributions.
Members of the staff association also offered brief public remarks. Sharon Gornick, who identified herself as a high‑school English teacher and SEA president, thanked the retirees and award recipients “for everything you bring to our district every day,” noting staff appreciation for the honorees’ work.
The board used the recognitions to underscore broader themes raised by speakers: prioritizing teacher support and professional development, maintaining high academic expectations for students, and preserving meaningful student experiences such as the Washington, D.C., trip discussed by a departing staff member.
The meeting proceeded to routine business after the recognitions, including approval of minutes and personnel consent items. The board reminded the public of upcoming events — final exams (June 11–16), graduation on June 18 — and encouraged community members to engage in district outreach and referendum information available on the district website.
The board closed the recognition segment by inviting retirees and awardees for photographs and public thanks; the next formal item on the agenda was a scheduled round of candidate interviews for a vacant board seat.
