Chadron council approves $8,128.20 change order for municipal project; engineering firm reduces fees $2,250

The Chadron City Council on Jan. 5 approved a change order that raises the cost of a municipal construction project by $8,128.20 to accommodate an 8-inch interior masonry block and a switch from a TimberTech privacy screen to a metal screen.
A staff presenter described two line items: $1,375 for changing a six-inch block wall to an eight-inch block to fit existing restroom fixtures and $6,753.20 to replace the TimberTech privacy screen with a metal alternative, for a combined total of $8,128.20. The council approved the change order by roll call vote.
City staff said the engineering firm JEO had provided material specifications that would not work for the privacy screen; after negotiations led by city staff and a staff member named Tom, the firm agreed to deduct $2,250 from its fees to address the error. “We negotiated with them on their mistake … they are deducting from their fees $2,250,” the staff member said.
Councilmembers did not amend the change order and voted in favor of accepting the revised pay request so the contractor can submit the next pay application.
The staff presentation noted that the masonry change was necessary because toilets already procured years earlier were sized for an 8-inch block wall. The city intends to include the approved change order in the next contractor pay request.
The resolution authorizing the change order was introduced as Resolution 2026-2 and approved by unanimous roll call (Graves, Alexi, Anderson, Shepard voted yes).
