Village raises municipal court costs under new state law

The village board on May 4 approved an ordinance raising municipal court costs to $48 for each separate matter, adopting the higher cap enabled by Wisconsin Act 113 (2025).
The police chief explained that Act 113 allows municipalities to increase the maximum court cost from the prior level of $38 to $48. Whitefish Bay’s existing local court cost was $23 per matter; staff said municipal court expenditures have been outpacing cost recovery. Following a brief explanation, the board approved the ordinance by voice vote.
The change applies to future municipal court matters consistent with the ordinance language.
