The New Kent County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt resolution R-27-26 supporting a SmartScale 7 application for a one-lane roundabout at the Route 30 and Farmers Drive intersection.
Amy Enman, representing VDOT/VOTE project staff, explained the safety audit for the 2.5-mile corridor identified conflict points at the Farmers Drive intersection and recommended a one-lane roundabout to improve geometry, access and traffic calming. Project development work produced a revised cost estimate of about $10.7 million (up from an earlier estimate near $8 million). Enman said New Kent County would serve as the SmartScale sponsor and the application seeks full state funding with no local match anticipated.
A supervisor asked how long the safety study ran; Enman said the safety audit took place the previous summer (JuneAugust) and she participated in a July field audit. The board then moved to adopt R-27-26 and recorded a unanimous roll-call vote.
The resolution directs staff to support VDOT in application and public involvement stages and to participate in future project development steps if selected for funding.
