Council forwards South Park social-district plan to state after boundary and outreach discussion

The Port Huron City Council voted May 26 to approve a South Park social district plan and forward it to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for final consideration.

Staff said the city council retains the authority to revoke a district by resolution and that licenses within a district flow through the council and can be revoked if a licensed establishment is determined to cause problems.

On roll call the social-district motion passed. Supporters described the district as an economic boost that allows licensed hospitality customers to walk to adjacent public spaces; some nearby residents had raised concerns during outreach, which staff said they had addressed by narrowing the district footprint around a gazebo area in Lincoln Park.

Next steps: staff will forward the district application to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and conduct required resident notification; council indicated it could revisit or revoke district approvals if public-safety or nuisance issues develop.
