Perkiomen Valley board honors retiring Superintendent Dr. Barbara A. Russell with proclamation

The Perkiomen Valley Board of School Directors on June 8 presented a formal proclamation honoring Dr. Barbara A. Russell for 41 years in education and her service as superintendent of the Perkiomen Valley School District.

Board President Miss White opened the meeting by reading a tribute that called Dr. Russell a visionary leader who prioritized people over test scores. The board then presented an official proclamation and a certificate of appreciation recognizing Dr. Russell's record of service and leadership in the district.

The proclamation recited Dr. Russell's tenure in the district and cited her role in implementing academic programs, modernizing facilities, and strengthening school-community ties. Board members spoke individually in the meeting's closing remarks to thank Dr. Russell for her leadership, patience and mentorship; several described her as composed, student-focused and collegial.

Dr. Russell responded with remarks of gratitude, calling the district's culture 'a family feel' and noting her appreciation for staff and board collaboration. She said completed items such as the negotiated contract and other initiatives leave her confident about the district's direction.

The board recessed briefly for refreshments and returned to continue business; the proclamation and certificate will be retained in the district's records. The board noted Dr. Russell's retirement will take effect at the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year and offered best wishes for her future plans.

The meeting adjourned after routine business; the board also announced it had met in executive session earlier to discuss safety and legal matters.
