Orangetown board opposes NYSDOT roundabout plan at Route 9W and Oak Tree Road

Orangetown’s Town Board on June 9 adopted a resolution opposing the New York State Department of Transportation’s proposed roundabout at the intersection of Route 9W and Oak Tree Road (Palisades), and asked DOT to pause advancement until the town and affected stakeholders are further consulted.
Supervisor Theres Kenny summarized the resolution, saying the board acknowledges the importance of safe and efficient transportation but that residents and local organizations expressed “substantial concerns regarding the potential impacts of the proposed roundabout on neighborhood character, traffic patterns, pedestrian safety, environmental resources, property impacts, and quality of life.” The resolution asks DOT to suspend advancement and to consider alternate designs in close consultation with residents, emergency providers and municipal officials.
The board approved the resolution by voice vote and indicated the resolution will be sent to NYSDOT, the governor and the region’s state legislative delegation. Several public commenters who said they attended DOT’s recent open house supported the resolution.
Next step: the town will forward the resolution to NYSDOT and state officials and continue local engagement on alternative designs and public-safety concerns.
