District: new Early Childhood building likely delayed; licensing, fire permit could push opening to May 2025

District administrators told the Elbert County School District C-2 Board of Education on Aug. 21 that the new Early Childhood facility's opening will likely be delayed because of state timelines for licensing and fire-permit processing.

Early Childhood Program lead Mrs. Gabehart reported that state licensing typically takes 60 to 90 days and, because of the state's schedule and the district's position (17th) in the queue for a fire permit, the facility probably cannot open until May 2025. Mrs. Gabehart said playground equipment has arrived and can be installed once the fire permit is issued. She also said preschool families would be able to use the KES parking lot on Aug. 22 and staff will park by the high school in the interim.

Superintendent Travis Hargreaves and trustees discussed operational impacts and follow-ups. Mrs. Durant asked BOOS for an updated detailed budget document for Early Childhood expenditures and Mr. Hargreaves said he would report back to the board on outstanding questions. The district noted that the earliest realistic opening depends on the state's permitting schedule and that local scheduling cannot override that process.

The board recorded no final decisions at the meeting and will receive updates as the district secures the fire permit and completes licensing steps. The district said the playground equipment could be installed immediately after permits are issued and emphasized that the timeline remains contingent on the state inspection and permitting process.
