The board reviewed proposed salary models for certified and uncertified teachers and discussed recruitment, certification timelines and contingency hiring.
Administration presented three certified teacher salary models with specific starting salaries for new teachers (Model 1: $57,710; Model 2 and Model 3 propose higher starting points). The district also showed proposed scales for uncertified secondary teachers under each model; those scales are intended to incentivize and support teachers working toward full certification.
District leaders told the board there are 18 secondary teachers currently working toward certification (eight at Alice High School and ten at WHAMS) and that the district will continue efforts to support testing and program completion. Board members urged clear contingency plans if certified candidates are not available by July and recommended streamlining recommended certification programs so candidates are not delayed by inconsistent vendor requirements.
What’s next: The salary models were presented for review at the budget process; a second budget workshop and final adoption are planned ahead of the August budget approval. Board members asked staff to continue recruiting certified applicants and to clarify contingencies for hiring uncertified teachers if vacancies remain close to school start.
