Whitefish Bay Village Board — April 7, 2025 — The Village Board voted to accept the final villagewide bicycle and pedestrian safety study, which consultants revised to reflect trustee comments and comparative data requests.
A trustee raised questions about charts comparing crash and walkability figures across municipalities, arguing that per-capita comparisons can mislead when communities differ markedly in walk and road miles. “The charts don’t give an incredibly clear picture as to where we stand versus other communities,” the trustee said, noting that denominators such as miles walked or biked and road miles can affect perceived safety rankings.
Board members agreed the study will be used as a menu of options for short-term traffic-calming and pilot projects. Staff said the next step is to bring a checklist of recommended short- and long-term projects to the public works committee and to identify one or more pilot locations for near-term trials.
The motion to accept the study carried on a voice vote. Trustees emphasized the goal of testing practical improvements in the coming construction season and incorporating lessons learned into longer-term capital planning.
