FAA offers VMAT grant; Pitkin County approves small airport match to equip airfield vehicles

Pitkin County commissioners on June 10 approved an emergency resolution authorizing the chair to sign an FAA grant application — and, if awarded, the grant agreement — to install Vehicle Movement Area Transponders (VMAT) at Aspen‑Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field).

Captain Treat, airfield manager, described VMAT as a system that broadcasts each airfield vehicle’s position and identifier to air traffic control once per second, making vehicles electronically visible on tower displays and providing collision alerts when an aircraft approaches a vehicle on a runway. The FAA has promoted the system as a surface‑awareness initiative following incidents elsewhere.

Financials and next steps The total cost quoted for equipping the airport’s vehicles and installing requisite tower equipment is about $175,500. The FAA would provide $166,725, leaving an airport match of $8,775 (about 5%). Staff brought an emergency request so the county could apply for and accept year‑end FAA grant funds, accelerate procurement and equip vehicles quickly.
