The Wallingford Planning & Zoning Commission on June 8 approved a special permit to excavate and remove pesticide‑impacted soil from the Quest Diagnostics property at 3 Sterling Drive.
Hannah Griezbach of Langan Engineering said the remediation would remove approximately 500 cubic yards of soil. She told the commission that required public notifications had been corrected and that photos documenting notice placement were submitted. "The impacted soil will just go to a landfill probably for daily cover," Griezbach said, adding the contractor would choose the nearest, most cost‑effective disposal option.
Commissioners pressed for operational details. Griezbach said hours would be standard daytime operations, about 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and that erosion and sediment controls would be used. Staff confirmed there was no additional correspondence beyond two photos submitted before the meeting.
The commission approved the permit subject to conditions: written comments from Wallingford Electric Division and the Water & Sewer Division, an erosion and sediment control bond in the amount of $2,500, and submission of six copies of final plans to the planning office. The vote was unanimous.
The approval allows the contractor to proceed with the limited excavation under the commission’s conditions; the applicant must satisfy the listed engineering and permitting conditions before construction begins.
