Montevallo council accepts Salem Cemetery maintenance contract and raises burial fees

Under the contract, Sherer will provide lawn maintenance and services at Salem Cemetery (1343 Salem Road) for 10 service cycles at $250 per service, for a total contract price of $2,500. Council Member David King moved to accept the contract and Council Member Lelia Mitchell seconded; the minutes record the vote as 4 Ayes and 1 Abstain, with Mayor Rusty Nix listed as the abstaining official. The contract text included in the appendices specifies payment terms (payment due within 15 days of invoice; a $10-per-week late charge applies after 15 days) and allows use of subcontractors by the contractor.
Separately, the council adopted a new fee schedule for Salem Cemetery: opening and closing graves will cost $900 and individual burial plots will be priced at $750. The council said previous plot sales will be grandfathered. The motion to set those fees passed on an All Ayes vote.
City officials said the maintenance contract covers existing landscaping only; any additional planting would require a separate landscape installation agreement. The maintenance contract and fee schedule are included in the meeting appendices for public record.
