Board amends bylaws to move regular hearings to 5:30 p.m. to improve public access

The Roanoke City Board of Zoning Appeals voted on June 10 to amend its bylaws to set regular public hearings for 5:30 p.m. on the Wednesday following the second Monday of each month.
Chair Jason Barney said the change followed a City Council request to make hearings more accessible to the public. Board members discussed whether the work session time should also change; staff noted that the bylaws do not currently set a time for work sessions and that moving the public hearing from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. would give staff roughly four-anda-half additional hours between the work session and hearing to respond to questions.
Board members said they were open to discussing work-session timing separately. The board moved to amend the bylaws to set the regular hearing time at 5:30 p.m. and approved the amendment unanimously.
The clerk will publish the updated meeting times on the board’s website as required by posting rules; no additional public hearing was necessary for the bylaws change, according to staff.
