The Weld County School District No. Re-5J Board of Education voted July 7 to raise the adult lunch price to $4.85 for the coming school year to comply with federal requirements for the National School Lunch Program. Director Proctor moved to approve the change and Director Musgrave seconded; the board approved the motion during the meeting.
District staff told the board the increase is driven by an annual federal calculation that ensures adult meals are not subsidized by the school lunch program. The presentation noted adult breakfast prices will stay the same and that the district’s director of student nutrition, Mrs Matcha, performs the calculations used to determine required adult pricing to maintain program compliance.
Staff said if the board chose not to raise the price the district general fund would need to reimburse approximately $1.05 for every adult meal served to cover the difference. One slide cited an estimated 2,000 adult meals served last year, though staff said they would confirm that number. Director Proctor introduced the motion to adopt the new price "as presented." The board approved the change and staff said the adjusted price will take effect for the coming school year.
The vote on the motion was recorded on the meeting record and staff indicated implementation details will follow through routine administrative channels.
