Surprise Library reports 1,200 summer‑reading signups, new interns and equipment donations

At the May 14 Surprise Library Advisory Commission meeting, the presenter (S1) reported early success for the library’s summer‑reading program and outlined staff and program updates.
"Registration started on May 1, and two weeks in, we already have 1,200 people signed up as of this morning," the presenter said, describing the program as "crushing it" compared with comparable valley libraries. She noted that only four libraries in the region have higher registrations and attributed the turnout to staff outreach and programming.
The presenter said two interns have begun work supporting operations across branches and that MultiGym is slated for a soft opening at the end of August with a later grand opening. New items in the Library of Things include ghost‑hunting kits, and the presenter credited a donation from Commissioner Ansel of two sewing machines, which staff converted into sewing kits now available for checkout.
The presenter also said five of six library card designs have been selected and will be announced at the June 2 city council meeting, at which commissioners are invited to attend. No formal motions or budget requests related to these items were made during the meeting.
