Residents urge investment in recreation and energy savings; council approves summer work program

Several residents used the public-comment period at the April 22 Payson Common Council meeting to press the council on transparency, recreation and park improvements, and to propose simple cost-saving measures.
Brook Myers thanked council and asked for a recurring monthly project-management meeting so stakeholders can track upcoming RFPs, RFQs and project status. "Transparency, let's keep it going," Myers said. Tom Dunning urged formation of a committee to pursue long-term 'green community' goals. Mike Quinn urged the council to invest in community amenities such as Ramsey Pool and cautioned that repealing the town’s food tax could reduce needed revenue for services. Mike Bowden suggested swapping municipal lighting to LED bulbs and recommended covered benches, more trash receptacles and activated fountains in Green Valley Park to attract visitors.
On the consent agenda, council approved a Gila County intergovernmental agreement to establish a summer work program for young people (Resolution 2026-012). Staff said applications are processed through Gila County and the program typically places roughly six to eight interns across county and town departments; staff described the program as cost-neutral to the town. That consent item passed 7–0.
Speakers thanked volunteers and praised recent events, including a successful mountain-bike race that drew hundreds of participants and helped attract visitors to Payson.
