Shawn Wilson, host of Waynesville’s weekly update, urged residents to attend a lineup of free summer events at Roubidoux Park and across the city, beginning with the Cruisin’ 66 Centennial Summer Concert Series kickoff on Saturday, June 13.
The series will open at 6:30 p.m. and run until about 9:00 p.m., Wilson said, with performances by Vic Vaughn, Sold Out and Haley Powers. The program is organized by the Waynesville St. Robert Chamber of Commerce and is free to the public; the city said vendors may sell food and beverages and volunteers are welcome.
Why it matters: The events are intended to draw residents to local parks and support small businesses and volunteers while celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66. City officials are promoting the schedule to increase local engagement and tourism.
Wilson said the city will also host a Great Race stop and opening ceremony on Sunday, June 21, at about 11:45 a.m. on Waynesville City Square along historic Route 66, inviting the public to meet drivers and view classic cars. The 38th annual Cave State Cruisers car, truck and motorcycle show will follow in Roubidoux Park June 27–28 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; vehicle owners must register to show rides, and spectator admission is free.
Wilson also noted a July 4 concert in Roubidoux Park that will conclude with fireworks. He encouraged residents to bring lawn chairs, support local businesses that help sponsor the events and to contact the park board about volunteer opportunities.
The park board meets every second Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Waynesville City Hall, Wilson said, and Dave Neely leads the board.
