Council approves FY2027 property and liability insurance renewal at $149,318

The Zeeland Common Council on June 1 approved renewal of the city's property and liability insurance for fiscal year 2027 with the Michigan Municipal League Liability and Property Pool at a premium of $149,318.
Assistant City Manager/Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer told council the renewal premium represents an approximately 10% increase over the current year. Staff compared coverage and pricing with the Michigan Professional Insurance Authority and found the Michigan Municipal League rates remained competitive, Plockmeyer said.
Plockmeyer also described a structural concern: Zeeland Board of Public Works (BPW) participates in MPIA arrangements while the City itself is not separately identified as an MPIA member, which could create overlapping or unclear responsibility for certain liabilities (for example, general liability and auto coverage for BPW employees who are legally city employees). Plockmeyer said MPIA’s corporate counsel will review bylaws and governing documents while the city renews coverage to preserve continuity and avoid gaps.
Councilmember Timmer moved to approve the renewal; Councilmember Langeland supported the motion, which passed unanimously.
