Police Citizens Academy praised; council proclaims June 2026 LGBTQ+ Pride Month

At the June 9 meeting the Moab Police Department reported on a six‑week Citizens Academy that ran in the spring and included 22 participants. Chief Bell described the academy’s format — weekly three‑hour sessions including a jail tour and hands‑on demonstrations — and said participants overwhelmingly requested a longer program next time.
Rachel, a recent participant, said the program reduced her apprehension of law enforcement and highlighted officers’ ‘‘integrity, transparency, compassion and a sense of humor.’’ Staff read multiple participant reviews praising the training quality and specific demonstrations, such as taser exposure and jail tours. Chief Bell said staff will produce videos and consider expanding future classes to eight weeks.
Also on the consent agenda, the council adopted a Pride Month proclamation recognizing June 2026 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and designated a week in September as Moab Pride Week. Council members publicly thanked Pride organizers and several councilors spoke in support; the consent agenda passed 5–0.
The council and staff said they will continue citizen engagement through future Citizens Academy sessions and will publicize any videos or materials developed from the recent cohort.
