Cohasset principals present school improvement plans and new curriculum maps

High school Principal Brian Scott and middle school Principal John Scotty presented end-of-year reviews and school improvement plans to the Cohasset School Committee on May 20, describing academic gains, student supports and next-year priorities.
"We have had a tremendous level of accomplishment this year," Principal Brian Scott told the committee, citing awards in Scholastic Art & Writing, a state football championship and high college acceptance rates for applicants. Scott outlined goals to unify teaching and deepen learning, expand targeted professional development (including guidance on classroom use of AI), and finalize an athletics mission and student‑athlete development program.
Middle school Principal John Scotty highlighted a three-part plan: foster a "culture of joy" (including the district’s first grade‑8 promotion ceremony), improve teaching with math and ELA interventionists, and strengthen MTSS tracking to ensure equitable access to supports. Scotty said a small locker pilot and minor schedule adjustments will be tested to address operational concerns raised by parents and students.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Leslie Stins showed the committee the district’s new public-facing curriculum maps for secondary grades, which list units, standards, essential questions and expected competencies. "You can come into our website, you hit on departments, and you will come right to curriculum instruction," Dr. Stins said as she walked members through the maps, adding that elementary maps will be published after summer work.
Committee members praised the alignment and urged the administration to make the maps easier to find on the district homepage so families can access them with fewer clicks.
The presentations emphasized a district-wide effort to define "student success" more broadly than traditional GPA or college admissions and to use longitudinal data and student feedback to shape next steps.
Next procedural steps include continued PD planning for 2026–27 and follow-up on pilot scheduling/locker options at the middle school.
