Supervisor's push to broaden LOST usage dies for lack of support at Adair County meeting

Supervisor Hoadley asked the Adair County Board of Supervisors on May 20, 2026, to explore the legal process to place a ballot measure before voters that would allow Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue to be used for a broader set of county services beyond Secondary Roads. Hoadley said the change would give the county flexibility to address unfunded mandates, law enforcement, public health and other services.
Opposition centered on road and bridge funding. Engineer Nick Kauffman told the board that about 44 bridges still need repair or replacement and warned that if LOST funds are redirected, Road Use Tax funds would likely need to be shifted from other uses to cover bridges. Supervisor Wedemeyer urged the board to consider spending reductions rather than moving LOST dollars away from Secondary Roads. Supervisor Baier emphasized maintaining funding for Public Health, emergency management, veterans’ affairs and the sheriff’s office.
Hoadley moved to take steps to determine the legal process necessary to place the LOST-restriction change on the November ballot; the motion died for lack of support. No formal vote was recorded on a ballot question during the meeting.
