Clover Park School Board approves court naming, $542,640 summer learning grant, boundary change and extends superintendent contract

The Clover Park School Board on June 8 approved four formal actions: naming the Clover Park High School tennis courts in honor of longtime educator and coach Gary Thomas; accepting a $542,640 DiscoverWorks summer-learning grant from the Ballmer Group; assigning a new Lakewood Town Center residential area to neighborhood code 491 (feeding Lake View Hope Academy, Hudtloff Middle School and Clover Park High School); and extending Superintendent Ron Banner’s contract through June 30, 2029.
For the tennis-court naming (agenda item 26-135), Superintendent Ron Banner described a naming committee convened under district policy 6970 and recommended the resolution based on Mr. Thomas’s 26 years as a teacher, coach and mentor. Board members asked about cost, and Banner said the renaming itself carries no district registration fee; only a nominal placard or sign cost would be incurred. The motion carried unanimously (moved by Director Kim, seconded by Director Kelleher).
The board also approved resolution 26-136 to accept a Ballmer Group DiscoverWorks grant for $542,640 to fund full-day summer academic and enrichment programming from June 22 through July 21 at identified sites. Superintendent Banner said the grant will fund programming outlined in the resolution and supporting documents, and Director Kim commended staff for pursuing grants that help students retain learning over the summer. The motion carried (moved by Director Lowry; seconded by Director Caldwell).
On attendance boundaries (26-137) the board approved assigning the newly developed multi-family housing in Lakewood Town Center to neighborhood code 491 and the feeder pattern of Lake View Hope Academy, Hudtloff Middle School and Clover Park High School. Banner told the board that because no currently enrolled students live in the new development, state law and district procedure 3130 P1 permit presentation directly to the board without a public hearing. The resolution directs the superintendent to update legal descriptions and notify government agencies and families of the change.
Finally, the board unanimously approved agenda item 26-138 extending Superintendent Ron Banner’s contract through June 30, 2029; the resolution cites RCW 28A.400.010 and notes that compensation provisions will be negotiated and any agreement will be retroactive to July 1, 2026 unless otherwise agreed. Director Lowry moved the extension and Director Kim seconded; the board approved by oral roll call.
All four items passed without recorded opposition. The board then moved to non-action reports and adjourned the meeting.
