The Greenwood Storm Water Board approved a technical study on June 10 to assess engineering needs and feasibility for removing invasive Bradford pear trees along the Tracy Ditch corridor and extending Tracy Trail beneath Horseville Road.
Chris Jones, director of storm water management, told the board the proposal calls for removing nonnative Bradford pears along the stretch between Stop 18 and Worst Road, converting portions of the corridor to a mowed native prairie with strategically placed trees, and evaluating whether the trail could be routed under Horseville Road. An Eagle Scout volunteer expressed interest in helping with on-the-ground remediation work.
Jones presented a quote from an engineering firm for a technical paper to inform design and safety requirements and recommended entering the agreement with terms to be set by the legal department. The board moved, seconded, and unanimously approved authorizing the storm water superintendent to sign the agreement, with the study cost capped at $10,000.
The study will determine what engineering interventions — if any — are needed for a safe trail undercrossing and for restoring habitat while maintaining drainage function. Staff said the study will also identify any permitting or easement issues that must be resolved before construction.
Next steps: staff will issue the scope for the technical paper and return to the board with the firm selection and schedule for the study results.
