Parks board weighs shaded canopies, pavilion and ADA swing at Rogers Farm Park

Kennedale parks staff reported June 9 that plans are underway to add shade at Rogers Farm Park and that a full pavilion would need approval from upper management because of cost. "I think we had a plan to put a shaded canopy at Roger's farm, but not a pavilion," the staff member said, adding that a shaded canopy could cost about $30,000 to $40,000 while a pavilion with a concrete floor and steel roof could approach $100,000.
The board discussed size and materials for the structure, weighing 16-by-16 or 20-by-20 options and choices of wood, metal or combinations. Staff said the project would likely be put out to bid and that any costs would come from the parks budget rather than a separate line item.
Board members and staff also discussed perimeter treatments to deter vehicles, including boulders, raised curbs or a low brick wall. Staff said they would consult the city manager about the preferred approach.
On playground equipment, staff described a recently installed “brand new state-of-the-art” playground at Rogers Farm and said adding shade would make the site more usable in hot weather. Staff also said they were pursuing an ADA-accessible swing: if a wheelchair-platform swing is chosen it will require a ramp and firm surfacing, which would add expense. "If we don't get the wheelchair swing, we'll get an ADA swing," the staff member said.
The board was told that work on a nearby ball field, in partnership with the Y, is progressing and that additional activity is expected within about a month. No formal motions or budget approvals for capital spending on Rogers Farm were made at the meeting.
The board approved the minutes from its May 12, 2026 meeting and later adjourned.
