The Valdez City School District board on Wednesday approved revisions to board policy 6161.1, altering how the district oversees selection and evaluation of instructional materials.
Kathy moved to approve the changes; Cara seconded the motion. The board voted four in favor and the motion passed.
According to trustees, the revision removes the separate citizens curriculum review committee and instead formalizes a role for parents and other community members on curriculum committees alongside staff and students. A board member summarized the change as a consolidation of existing committees and said the change is likely to be followed by similar committee consolidations elsewhere in board policy.
The vote was taken during the meeting’s new-business items; trustees spoke briefly about the intent to increase public and parental engagement in curriculum review while simplifying committee structures. The board did not amend the text further and recorded a 4–0 approval.
The board also approved the consent agenda earlier in the meeting by a 4–0 vote.
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for July 13, when newly seated trustees will be sworn in.
