Committee highlights PBIS, student ambassadors and improved family perceptions

District staff told the Education Student Services Committee on June 10 that family perception of school safety and climate has improved and credited investments in school climate, PBIS implementation, social-emotional learning and family engagement.
Mrs. Murphy said family perceptions of school safety rose from 62% in fall 2023 to 73% in spring 2026. She also described PBIS implementation: last year three elementary schools and both middle schools earned tier 2 badges, and this year all five schools retained their tier 2 badges. Student ambassadors were used to lead interviews and evidence walks, and staff said including students elevated the work and made it more authentic.
Mr. Hayes presented the 'Where Everyone Belongs' (WEB) pilot, explaining that eighth-grade WEB leaders received training and supported incoming sixth graders through one-half-day summer activities, ongoing check-ins during the year and team-building. The program ran in two schools during its pilot year and staff said recruitment is already underway for the coming school year.
Committee members asked about selection and evaluation; Mr. Hayes said leaders applied and recruitment included teacher recommendations and student letters of interest. Staff said the PBIS work will continue to be tied to the district's comprehensive plan and to academic supports.
The committee did not take formal action on the PBIS or WEB presentations; staff said work will continue in the 2026–27 school year.
