Florence accepts $25,000 donation for municipal pool and receives dam safety award; manager outlines new programs

City Manager Lori Cobler announced on Jan. 5 that the City of Florence received a $25,000 donation from Black Hills Energy intended for the Florence Municipal Pool, and she accepted the gift on the city’s behalf.
"We are sincerely grateful the City of Florence is for Black Hills’ support and partnership," Cobler said, noting the donation will support the pool and its role for local families. Shortly after, Mark Perry of the State Engineer’s Office of Dam Safety presented Florence with an Award of Excellence in Dam Safety for proactive maintenance and operation of its five high-hazard dams.
Cobler also recognized city employees for service milestones, naming Dan Kelso (5 years, Water Treatment), Kevin Wertsbaugh (10 years, Water Treatment), Brandon Harris (15 years, Water Treatment), Sam Elstun (20+ years, Public Works), and Dave Smith (20 years, Public Works). The recognitions were highlighted as contributing to workforce morale and retention.
During public comment, residents and guests raised related community matters: Steve Andrews urged more electric vehicle compatibility and services in Florence, and Mikey Guanipa of Drive Clean Colorado outlined EV services and potential funding sources. Tim Adrian relayed a local postmaster’s request to relocate a mailbox and said the relocation would conflict with local and state requirements.
City Manager Cobler closed the reports portion by previewing upcoming items and programs, including a proposed city newsletter, Operation Pothole, and the 81226 Reporting initiative; she also credited Planning Director Ashley Fox for work on a sidewalk assessment and securing a fire mitigation grant.
The presentations were ceremonial and informational; no formal council action was taken on the donation or the award at the Jan. 5 meeting.
