Board names Antigo Daily Journal as official publication despite subscription concerns

The Unified School District of Antigo board voted to designate the Antigo Daily Journal as the district's official publication after members discussed the availability and subscriber requirements of local newspapers.
Board member Angie Shriber questioned whether the Journal, which requires paid subscriptions, would serve all residents and suggested the free Antigo Times might be more accessible. A staff member and the chair responded that state statute sets criteria for official newspapers, including minimum subscriber numbers and county clerk registration, and that the Antigo Times did not meet those requirements.
"The Antigo Daily Journal requires a subscription... I'm wondering if it would be better for the community if we use the Antigo Times," Shriber said during debate. Staff replied that an official paper must meet statutory criteria, including subscriber thresholds and registration with the county clerk.
After discussion, the board used a voice vote to approve the designation; the motion carried. Board members noted the district will continue to post notices and content via social media and the district website so residents without subscriptions can access key information.
