North Miami authorizes city attorney to explore joining lawsuits against Florida property-tax amendment

Councilwoman Esté Irvin moved the authorization and Councilman Charles seconded; the motion carried 5-0. During discussion council members asked about legal and communications limits for the city. The city attorney cautioned that municipalities typically may provide informational material about ballot measures but cannot engage in direct advocacy that says "vote yes" or "vote no." He said the city will prepare guidance and may return with a formal resolution on how to proceed.
The authorization does not obligate the city to join any particular lawsuit; it permits the attorney to proceed with further investigation and to engage outside counsel or partners if the city decides participation is warranted.
