North Miami proclaims Pride Month and Pulse Remembrance Day

A council member explained that Pride “is about healing, visibility, grief, relief, safety, community, self-acceptance” and noted the movement’s roots in the June 1969 Stonewall protests. Dr. Travis Stokes of the Miami-Dade County LGBTQ Advisory Board accepted the proclamation and praised the city: “You all have been a pillar… you lead the area and every city wants to be like North Miami,” he said.
Council members framed the Pulse remembrance as an act of memorial and a call for continued efforts to combat hatred. The proclamation cited the June 12, 2016, attack that killed 49 people and described remembrance as strengthening a commitment to dignity, equality and safety for LGBTQ+ people. David Rodriguez of Equality Florida thanked the council and asked the community to remember those affected.
The proclamations were presented during the council’s scheduled ceremonial portion of the meeting and were followed by routine city announcements and community programming information.
