Commission hears updates on courts, pools, July 4 planning and the Wave House elevator

At its June 10 meeting the New Canaan Park and Recreation Commission received routine but detailed updates on multiple recreation operations, including tennis and pickleball court design and repairs, pool membership and check-in improvements, July 4 event logistics and accessibility upgrades to a municipal building ahead of a planned ribbon-cutting.
Jeff (speaker 9) and other staff summarized membership figures through June 1 showing slight decreases in some adult tennis passes and a small decline in pickleball passes; staff stressed the numbers represent a snapshot and could change later in the season. Commission members noted paint adhesion problems on some courts and discussed construction options: designers are preparing cost estimates and public works remains responsible for the project; staff said coated asphalt may be used at one site rather than post-tension concrete to improve paint adhesion. Commissioners emphasized the need for cost estimates from designers before selecting an installer or construction approach.
Pool operations were updated: nonresident pool memberships at Wavenby/Banco were reported sold out and resident memberships were on schedule (643 reported). The pool is open daily 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. through Labor Day except for shortened hours on July 4; IT-assisted check-in improvements were credited with reducing lines. Staff were asked whether the IT upgrade will also be applied to the beach-pass system after past undercounting of children on family passes; staff said they will review possibilities and that baseline and rain-triggered water testing are in place for pond-swimming sites.
The commission also heard an extensive July 4 planning report: fireworks will be relocated to improve egress on South Latham Road, a QR/text notification system will be used for traffic updates, and provisions are being made for people sensitive to loud noises to use a quieter area of the site. Organizers requested volunteer help selling entrance passes on three dates in late June and early July.
Separately, Kiwanis Park staff reported the pond has been drained, cleaned and is being refilled as officials evaluate a chlorine-free treatment; playground safety upgrades were completed, but the basketball court needs crack repairs prior to heavy summer use. Staff also updated the commission on the Wave House elevator: tempered-glass panes were remanufactured and the project remains on a near-term completion timeline. A ribbon-cutting and grand-opening event is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m., with state grant representatives invited.
The commission set the next regular meeting for July 8 and postponed any August meeting; an ice-rink approval item was scheduled for the July meeting rather than a special session.
