Kanab City staff briefed the council on Jan. 20 about a Utah Department of Transportation request to preserve a wide right-of-way (ROW) along US‑89A between Kanab and the Arizona state line.
City Manager Kyler Ludwig told the council that UDOT Region 4 has proposed two cross-section options: a minimum 125-foot ROW to support a five-lane section and an optional 150-foot ROW if shared-use paths and sidewalks are included on both sides. UDOT asked the city to provide input on preferred total width, which side should host a shared-use path, and whether drainage should use an urban curb-and-gutter or a rural swale design.
Ludwig said UDOT will survey the corridor and offered to cover surveying and deed-preparation costs for willing property owners through its corridor preservation program. He added that a formal ordinance to preserve the ROW will be presented to the Planning Commission for review; the item was deferred to February due to a meeting cancellation.
Council discussion focused on coordination steps and balancing long-term transportation needs with current property and development interests. No final decision on width or design was made at the meeting; the council directed staff to continue coordination with UDOT and to vet a preservation ordinance through the Planning Commission.
A corridor survey is expected in the coming weeks as part of UDOT's preservation process.
