AOS board approves $6,000 storage purchase and $25,000 renovation checks to ease transition

Chair Wayne Parlin called the meeting to order. A staff member who reviewed the budget told the board she had "gone through each actual cost center" and included a movers' quote of roughly $7,480 and an initial dumpster rental of $675. The staff member said the district's accounting shows about $88,000 available as carryover once encumbrances and expected reimbursements are reconciled.
Board members discussed options for storing AOS materials during the move. A staff figure for renting a storage container was cited at $196 per month with a $375 move fee; board members also discussed buying a container outright for about $6,000. "You're almost better off to spend the 6,000 and buy it," one board member said during the discussion.
The board also reviewed town billing and payments. The staff member said the towns have paid approximately $1,137,990 to date and that, by current accounting, there remains an about $50,000 discrepancy to reconcile; she said she would follow up with the towns to collect outstanding amounts. In discussion, board members listed approximate outstanding balances by town: Bristol (about $29,000), Noble (about $30,000), South Bristol (about $9,000) and Jefferson (about $40,000). The figures were presented as estimates derived from quarterly billings and encumbrance entries.
To ease transition costs, a board member proposed issuing one-time renovation payments of $25,000 to each affected school rather than assigning uneven burdens. "I think each school ought to take a one-time rent check...for costs incurred," the member said. The board carried two motions: to purchase a ConX storage container for $6,000 and to authorize flat-rate $25,000 renovation allocations to Jefferson and Noble-area schools. Both motions were seconded; the transcript records the chair calling for "All in favor?" and the board proceeding without a detailed roll call.
The meeting ended with no further business and adjournment at 6:24 p.m.
Why it matters: The approved purchases and one-time renovation allocations draw from the AOS carryover and are intended to cover short-term transition costs tied to moving the special-education program and related services.
