Ware County to pilot monthly bulk-item collection starting July

Ware County commissioners approved a trial bulk-item collection program to begin on the third Saturday in July and operate one Saturday per month on a trial basis.

Staff described the county plan to host bulk drop-offs behind the public-works facility and proposed rules and signage copied and modified from a neighboring municipality. Commissioners set pilot hours at 9 a.m.–2 p.m., limited drop-off to two loads per household per collection day and banned tires, batteries, construction debris and hazardous materials. Staff recommended starting with a single Saturday in July as a trial, tracking demand and costs (estimated dumpster rental $1,500–$2,400 for three 30-yard dumpsters depending on tonnage), and adding security/monitoring (public-works staff, operator for grapple and possibly deputies for early events) as needed to prevent illegal dumping.

Commissioners discussed implementation details including whether to allow landlords and how to verify residency; the board agreed on requiring proof of county residency (utility bill or state-issued ID) and to prohibit commercial dumping. Staff will finalize the sign language and contract terms, schedule dumpster vendors and confirm staffing for the July pilot. The board said they will review the pilot after three months and adjust frequency or hours as needed.
