Wales council approves minutes, invoices and community events; hears infrastructure and budget updates

Business approvals: Council accepted the minutes of the April 7 regular meeting (motion by David Larson, seconded by Brian Smith) and the April 23 budget work meeting (motion by Brian Smith, seconded by Helen Clawson). Both motions passed with recorded votes in favor from Mayor James Roberts and Council members Helen Clawson, David Larson and Brian Smith. Council also approved payment of the April invoices after a motion by Council member Larson.
Community events and administration: The council approved a free community health screening on Saturday, Nov. 28, to be held in conjunction with the Fire Department's Santa breakfast. Town administrators confirmed a town cleanup with dumpsters arranged for May 9.
Budget and grants: Mayor James Roberts presented a preliminary budget for fiscal year 2026—27 and said Community Impact Board (CIB) grant applications have been submitted for three projects: a third well, street work, and an irrigation addition. No further details on CIB responses were available at the meeting.
Infrastructure and emergency preparedness: Council discussed emergency-preparedness measures, including obtaining backup generators for the Town Hall, Fire Hall and booster-pump building (one price option cited was $24,000; staff will solicit additional bids). An east-park fence installation was planned for the week of May 11. The council discussed locating a future Well #3 above town for better production or improving the present spring; a defibrillator for the Town Hall is budgeted for the next fiscal year. Mayor Roberts also noted that E-911 service costs will rise and those charges will be passed through at the county level.
Streets and parks updates: Council member Brandon Rees reported valves would be installed on May 7 to enable a power connection. Peckham Paving is scheduled to repave 200 North in front of the fire station and to repair 200 West. Parks reports included completion of sprinkler improvements and a request to include solar-power work for the automated system in the coming budget.
