Shiawassee County board approves $5.9 million in warrants, OKs contracts and staffing changes

The board voted 5-0 to authorize payments and warrants totaling $5,900,774.34. Commissioner Garber moved the motion, which Commissioner Howard seconded; the roll call vote recorded Holzhausen, Garber, Howard, Emery and Chairman Brodeur as voting yes.
The board also approved multiple procurement and personnel items. Commissioners approved a proposal from Country Boy Builders, LLC for a metal roof at Kerby Road Park not to exceed $9,850 (motion by Commissioner Garber, second by Commissioner Holzhausen). They approved replacing one correctional deputy at a pay rate not to exceed Step 3 (motion by Commissioner Emery, second by Commissioner Howard). Separately, the board voted to fill a vacant drain maintenance supervisor position (motion by Commissioner Howard, second by Commissioner Garber).
On capital projects and contracts, the board approved a $174,000 proposal from DSquared Concrete and Construction for a new parking lot at the county 911 facility (motion by Commissioner Emery, second by Commissioner Howard) and authorized a contract with Advanced Correctional Healthcare, Inc. in an amount not to exceed $287,296 for jail healthcare services, authorizing the board chair to execute the contract (motion by Commissioner Emery, second by Commissioner Howard). All votes on these items carried on recorded 5-0 tallies where a roll call is noted.
The board approved PA 116 farmland agreement applications for Chris and Jamie Demerly for two parcels in Bennington Township (motion by Commissioner Howard, second by Commissioner Garber) and appointed Commissioner Garber as the county's MERS delegate (motion carried). Several committee minutes were also approved during the session.
Public commenters raised local concerns during the meeting. Paula Brooks of Durand mentioned the 911 parking lot and trees in a neighborhood referred to as 'Shiatown'; Rex Wheeler of New Lothrop provided an update on Owosso Speedway. The board took the stated actions and adjourned at 5:24 p.m.
