South Redford SEAB reports recruiting progress and plans two-year report

District officials told the board that the Sex Education Advisory Board has met multiple times this year and is preparing the two-year report required by state law.
Amy Davidson, the district’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, introduced co-chair Elizabeth Duparin and SEAB member Claire, who reported that the committee met three to four times, recruited parents, teachers, a school-clinic nurse practitioner and a member of the clergy, and reviewed preliminary student data and existing curriculum practice. "Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop healthy relationships and to avoid sexual behaviors that put them at risk for HIV, other STI, and unintended pregnancy," the SEAB representatives said.
Committee members said they have begun drafting a philosophy, assumptions and goals for the two-year report and plan to recommend curriculum tools at each grade level; they also discussed growing middle- and elementary-level health instruction and a timeline to submit the report next year. Board members asked when sex-education topics begin; the SEAB said puberty curriculum currently begins in fourth grade.
The SEAB emphasized recruiting more parents and students for next year so that at least half its membership comprises parents not employed by the district, as state guidance and local practice intend. The board thanked SEAB members for their work and signaled it will expect the two-year report at a future meeting.
